GREYHOUND (2020)

“Greyhound” (2020) is a World War II naval thriller directed by Aaron Schneider, with a screenplay by and starring Tom Hanks. The film is based on the 1955 novel “The Good Shepherd” by C.S. Forester.

Set in the early months of America’s involvement in World War II, the story follows Captain Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) as he commands his first wartime mission. Krause is tasked with leading a convoy of 37 Allied ships across the treacherous North Atlantic, known for its perilous weather and the constant threat of German U-boats. The convoy’s destination is Liverpool, England.

The film’s primary focus is the intense and relentless naval battle between Krause’s destroyer, the USS Keeling (codenamed Greyhound), and a wolfpack of German submarines. As the convoy enters the “Black Pit,” a section of the Atlantic Ocean beyond the reach of Allied air cover, Krause must utilize all his skills and experience to protect his ships from the enemy.

Throughout the journey, Krause faces numerous challenges, including limited resources, sleep deprivation, and the psychological burden of command. His determination and unwavering commitment to his crew are put to the test as he makes strategic decisions to outmaneuver the U-boats and ensure the safety of the convoy.
