“Das Boot” (1981) is a highly acclaimed German war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen. It is based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lothar-GΓΌnther Buchheim, who drew from his own experiences as a war correspondent during World War II.

The film is set during World War II and follows the crew of a German U-boat, U-96, on a patrol mission in the Atlantic Ocean. The narrative explores the harrowing and claustrophobic experiences of the submarine crew as they navigate the dangers of underwater warfare, including the constant threat of enemy depth charges, the psychological strain of being confined in the submarine, and the camaraderie among the crew members.
