The original film was released in 1997 and featured an A-list cast, led by Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Danny Trejo, and Owen Wilson, with Luis Llosa directing. The film tells the story of a film crew taken hostage by a hunter in the Amazon rainforest trying to track a giant snake. The 1997 film spawned three sequels: Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004), Anaconda 3: Offspring (2008), and Anacondas: Trail of Blood (2009). A Chinese remake was released in 2024.

The upcoming comedy-horror film was announced in August 2024 and will be directed by Tom Gormican, who co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten. It will also star Daniela Melchior, Thandiwe Newton, and Selton Mello. Although the upcoming film is a remake of the first, it isn’t described as a direct remake, instead taking a more meta turn, following a group of middle-aged friends who go to reshoot their favorite movie from their youth.
